Job Description

The Saffire Experiment (Spacecraft Fire Experiment) conducts ground-based and in-space experiments that will reduce the likelihood of a fire on an exploration spacecraft or habitat and, if one should occur, reduce its impact on the vehicle, mission, and crew. The objective of the Saffire project is to conduct a large-scale material flammability test in extended low gravity. The important phenomena related to material flammability in spacecraft fire safety are dominated by the low-gravity forced convective flow environment. Personnel with experience in conducting these types of experiments are essential to design successful ground-based and flight experiments.


Position Summary:

The Aerospace Engineer will support the design, development, and testing of the large-scale material flammability experiments, with specific emphasis on Li-ion batteries and their failure modes. The Scientist I will work closely with the Saffire engineering team to design the experiments and characterize/calibrate the experiment instrumentation including radiometers, cameras, and anemometers. The Scientist I will collect and analyze data from the experiments and prepare research results for publication.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop test plan and facility capability requirements to conduct Li-ion battery failure testing for spacecraft applications.
  • Outline and document the fire safety issues facing exploration vehicles and describe and assess the options that would help mission planners and fire safety SMEs develop the necessary requirements to address fire scenarios on specific vehicles.
  • Perform experiments, collect and analyze data.
  • Prepare research results for publication in reports, papers, journals, books, and other media.

Required Qualifications:


  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in Combustion Science.


  • Master’s degree with 5 years of experience or Ph.D. with 1 year of experience in combustion science and Li-ion battery technology.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Function independently or as part of a team, with minimal direct supervision.
  • Propose credible and innovative experiment plans, develop the necessary skills to perform the work, and carry out the research, providing the required reporting to the project management in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written formats, including presentations to the scientific research community, and government representatives.

  • Proficient using laboratory equipment and instrumentation including radiometers, cameras, and anemometers

Working Conditions:

Work will be performed in an office or computer lab environment.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; talk or hear.  Keyboarding for large time spans each day may be a significant part of this position.
