Job Description

The Director, Corporate Development will lead strategy development and implementation of a comprehensive fundraising program, targeting individual, corporate, and foundation donors.  This is a new position that will report directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer, and work closely with the executive team and other leaders to diversify and grow current fundraising efforts.  Initial focus will be on supporting the STEMaction Center, a hub for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, as well as USRA’s Earth from Space Institute.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Identify, research, and evaluate prospective individual, corporate, and foundation donors to build a prospect pipeline.
  • Conduct in-person cultivation, briefing and solicitation meetings, independently and in partnership with the executive team and other leaders to secure funding.
  • Implement fund development plans in accordance with ethical fundraising principles.
  • Establish and achieve annual fundraising goals.
  • Monitor and evaluate all fundraising activities to ensure that the fundraising goals are being achieved.
  • Manage and coordinate a cultivation and stewardship program that includes one-on-one meetings, cultivation events, regular communications and reports, and other initiative to engage and inform prospective donors.
  • Oversee and coordinate efforts to acknowledge, recognize, and record all gifts to USRA in a consistent and timely manner.
  • Oversee the administration of a donor mailing list and database which respects the privacy and confidentiality of donor information.
  • Serve as the liaison to the executive team and other leaders for all fundraising activities, reporting on fundraising status for current programs as well as encouraging the identification and support of emerging priorities.
  • Work with the executive team to continually refine strategy, protocol, and procedures related to the fundraising program. Communicate priorities internally to staff.
  • Prepare regular reports on progress, budgets, receipts and expenditure related to fundraising and the management of the fund development activities.
  • Monitor expenses and analyze budget reports on fund development and recommend changes as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

 

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university, preferably in business or other related field required; graduate degree preferred.

Experience:

  • 7-10 years of progressive development experience, preferably in a science and technology and/or education focused nonprofit environment.
  • Successful track record of soliciting and closing individual, corporate and/or foundation gifts.
  • Experience in building and managing a portfolio of individual, corporate and/or foundation donors.
  • Experience coordinating event and/or communications programs focused on donor engagement.
  • Familiarity with fundraising office administration (best-practice, protocol, procedures, and record/data management).
  • Excellent diplomacy, verbal and written communication skills, time management, and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel regionally and work occasional evenings and weekends, as required.
  • Experience in fostering collaboration across a large, geographically expansive organization preferred.

Licenses, Certifications:

  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification a plus.

Technology:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and its applications.

Working Conditions:

This job operates in a professional office environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc., and the internet.  This is largely a sedentary role.

Telecommute:

Position is eligible for telecommuting, as circumstances dictate.
