Job Description

This is a very crucial and key engineering research position within the CWRU Science Team supporting the Development and Validation of Analysis Tools (DVAT) Task under the Evolvable Cryogenics (eCryo) NASA project. The computational work requires development nodal and CFD models for simulation and design of Cryogenic Fluid Management (CFM) systems for propellant and life support fluid storage and transfer in Space.  Substantial time will also be devoted to verifying and validating the models against existing ground-based and microgravity data. The individual filling this position will face a steep learning curve and expectation of high performance and timely delivery to meet rather stringent project milestones. Prior experience and expertise with CFD modelling/codes is therefore required.

The main responsibility of the prospective candidate will be to work with multipurpose CFD codes such as Sinda/Fluint, Ansys/Fluent, Flow3D, and STAR-CCM to develop 1D, 2D, 3D two-phase computational models for various CFM operations in 1G and microgravity. This also requires ability to develop and encode submodels to customize the multipurpose codes by augmenting their existing capabilities for the task at hand and validating these codes against 1g and microgravity data.


Essential Functions:

  • Develop state-of-the-art two Phase CFD Models for simulation of 1g and microgravity CFM simulation for the NASA Cryo project. (35%)
  • Validate the CFD models against results of 1g and microgravity experiments (25%)
  • Run parametric case study simulations, analyze and post process results, prepare animations and professional graphics (20%)
  • Help prepare progress reports, presentations and technical papers (20%)


 Nonessential Functions:

  • Present paper in national conferences
  • Work with CAD software
  • Take training course for different software packages and multipurpose codes




  • Dr. Kassemi and ZBOT and eCryo Science teams:  (50%) for model development, technical paper preparation, eCryo day to day activities and NASA reviews.
  • MAE Chairman and other faculty in MAE: (5%) technical consultation, reporting progress, presentation


  • Computer services and computational cluster personnel : (5%) run simulations


  • NASA GRC: (40%) for preparation of computational models, NASA project reviews, technical presentation and attending biweekly eCryo project meetings. Cryo Cluster computational platform.

Required Qualifications:


  • Masters or PhD level mechanical or chemical engineer with 2-3 years or more of CFD and numerical modelling work/research experience preferably in the area of multiphase flow & heat transfer. US Citizenship or Permanent Residency (Green Card) is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Minimum 2-3 years of intimate hands-on working knowledge with CFD codes such as Ansys-Fluent Flow3D or Star-CCM CFD code,
  • Significant experience with writing customized User Defined Functions
  • Strong coding ability in Fortran, C++, Python.
  • Working experience with Matlab, AutoCAD, Excel
  • Excellent team work and interpersonal skills
  • Precise, organized, analytical and quick study
  • Good writing and presentation skills

Working Conditions:

Work will be performed at NASA Glenn Research Center and requires careful adherence to NASA safety and security regulation especially with regard to IT security and dealing with non-classified but sensitive material and export control. Occasional travel to conference locations are required.
