Job Description

USRA is the prime contractor for the NASA Academic Mission Services (NAMS) contract at NASA Ames Research Center. This aspect of the NAMS mission is to staff the Ames Airborne Sensor Facility (ASF) that supports NASA’s Earth Science Division (ESD) long-term mission requirements for airborne systems development and operation.

Position Summary:

Responsible for the development, maintenance, and operation of a suite of airborne remote sensing and real-time data systems serving the NASA Office of Earth Science.  These include multispectral visible and infrared imagers and sat-com based communications systems which are flown on the ER-2 and other NASA science aircraft.   The engineer directly supports flight operations and works with technicians and data analysts to assure that the instruments are functioning properly and that quality data are being collected.  The engineer will also support new systems design and development, working in conjunction with the engineering staff at the ASF.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the design, development and operation of various airborne data acquisition systems
  • Develop and test systems to support data acquisitions for Earth Science research

Required Qualifications:



  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, physics, or a related field is required



  • A minimum of 1 year of relevant experience in the area of sensor systems development or calibration is required.


Licenses, Certifications:


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  

  • Working knowledge of basic electrical engineering principles is necessary.
  • Familiarity with flight systems and avionics hardware, particularly with real-time data systems and infrared digital imaging systems, is preferred
  • Open to learning new technologies and programming tools.
  • Excellent written communication skills along with strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to think independently and strategically and assess solutions for short and long term goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in an interdisciplinary team of engineers as well as independently.



  • Software: Working knowledge of C, JAVA, C++, HTML, SolidWorks, Eagle, MATLAB, JavaScript, Xilinx, Python.
  • Electronics: Circuit theory and design, sensor hardware design, motor control systems design
  • Technical –Circuit board prototyping, embedded systems design, microcontrollers, rapid prototyping, systems integration, 802.11 networks, API development, soldering and cabling, oscilloscopes, multimeters,
  • Operating Systems – Windows (7, 8.1, 10), Linux (Ubuntu, CentOS), Raspbian, Mac OS X, Virtual Box

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting scientific instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation control and calibration.


Working Conditions:

This job operates in a professional laboratory environment. This role routinely uses standard electrical engineering tools, such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, logic analyzers, and soldering/crimping tools.



Some travel (domestic and foreign) is required to support science field campaigns.
