NASA Ames Mission Support (NAMS) tasks support strategic multi-disciplinary, integrative research and science that supports NASA's long term mission requirements for Aerospace flight software research. The NAMS team in collaboration with NASA customer is working to meet the challenges for Air Traffic Management (ATM)

The air traffic management (ATM) system is evolving into a more demanding and complex airspace environment than when it was first designed. As air traffic demands grow, it is projected that there will be increases in terms of passenger delays, impact to the environment, and costs to the airlines, as well as higher and more complex workload demands to air traffic service providers. ATM researchers and service providers must find ways to increase airspace capacity and flexibility. In partnership with NASA, the FAA and airlines, Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2) is developing and fielding technology for the integrated scheduling of arrival, departure, and surface air traffic. This work supports software development activities for the fielded version and future releases of ATD-2 tools.

Position Summary:

Software Engineer will support software development and test of concepts and algorithms for the ATD-2 project.  The Software Engineer will work in a small team of highly motivated software developers and aviation researchers that is central to the national effort to support the development and deployment of ATD-2 functionality. The incumbent will collaborate with the Software Lead for ATD-2 project.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide on-site support to the Airspace Systems Division (Code AF) in the development, integration, and test of software and algorithms for ATD-2 project
  • Adhere to established software development processes, utilizing incident tracing and configuration management systems.
  • Assist the Software Lead in translating ATD-2 concepts into software requirements
  • Design, implement, and test features that pertain to the ATD-2 system
  • Maintain and upgrade current software
  • Prepare documentation
  • Other job related duties as assigned
  • Work productively in a team environment

Required Qualifications:


  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aeronautics or a related scientific discipline and 2 years of substantial relevant experience, or Bachelor’s degree in one of the disciplines noted above and at least 5 years of relevant experience.


  • 0-5 years of experience of developing software in Java
  • Object-oriented software design and development, Java patterns
  • Experience with maintenance and upgrade of current software, new code generation, and documentation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication/presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to customers and team members.
  • Experience with full software development lifecycle (SDLC) processes, including Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), debuggers, source control and bug tracking systems (i.e. Maven, Git)

Other Desired Skills and Experience

  • Unix/Linux
  • Git or similar configuration management tool
  • Atlassian tools JIRA, FishEye/Crucible, Confluence
  • IDE, preferably Eclipse
  • Unit, integration and system testing basics
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Unix shells, Perl and Python is a plus
  • Relational database and SQL basics
  • RESTful API
  • Web application basics
  • Java script

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  

  • Knowledge of XML, GML (Geography Markup Language) and KML (Keyhole Markup Language) for publicly available adaptation information.
  • Knowledge of Software Development Full Life Cycle (SDLC) process

  • Self-motivated to independently work productively
  • Willing to take the initiative to try new technologies.
  • Commitment to writing high quality code
  • Compliance to coding standards and documented procedures

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc. Extensive online usage. This is largely a sedentary role.
