Job Description

The Universities Space Research Association (USRA) has a mission to advance space-related sciences and exploration through innovative research, technology, and education programs that involve universities, governments, and the private sector for the benefit of humanity.  As part of this mission, we conduct research and development on technologies that enable the next generation of capabilities for integrating and analyzing engineering and science data.  Towards this end, a model-based Enterprise Data Integration (EDI) platform is being developed with the NASA Headquarters Chief Information Officer (OCIO), to support a growing portfolio of data analytics needs across NASA.  The platform is currently being used to integrate and analyze engineering data for the EVA (Extra Vehicular Activities) Office and for Orion spacesuit logistics, as well as for other types of engineering and science data across NASA.  This new capability is designed to directly address actions resulting from investigation into a life-threatening incident that happed to an astronaut on-orbit, and to address long standing needs for improved utilization of engineering data across NASA.

Position Summary:

The Data Architect will be a key member of the data integrations team, will design and develop many types of software to specifications including software and tooling for data manipulation and intelligent high-performance web applications. The engineer will primarily work on model-based software and data systems that intelligently relate heterogeneous engineering data; additionally, the engineer will support scientists and subject matter experts with integrating their data sets with the platform.  The engineer will also assist with other subsystems across the platform as necessary.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the lead data architect for the Enterprise Data Integration (EDI) project
  • Develop models for specific engineering and scientific domains at NASA, including data models, database schemas, and conceptual and logical business models of engineering activities.
  • Present data architecture to key stakeholders at NASA headquarters and various NASA centers
  • Identify and document current and future state of data architecture.
  • Research, promote and develop data architecture best practices.
  • Demonstrate ability to learn and research advanced data technologies and concepts, learning new skills and emerging technology as necessary
  • Work closely with BA, business and IT teams to clarify and refine functional data requirement specifications.
  • Research, present and accurately articulate benefits and goals of relevant technologies such as Hadoop, NoSQL databases, data virtualization and data services.
  • Maintain, update and enhance NASA relateddata dictionaries, data models and data standards
  • Maintain database performance by identifying and resolving production and application development problems
  • Provide technical advice on data architecture related trends, issues, and tools
  • Establish new data standards and processes to support the company's needs.

Required Qualifications:


Bachelor of Science in Computer Science required or equivalent years of experience


  • At least 5 years of experience designing, developing, and implementing data warehouse and business intelligence solutions
  • At least 5 years of experience in computer system architecture
  • At least 5 years of experience in IT project engineering
  • At least 5 years of experience in IT solutions design
  • At least 3 years of experience in data analysis and visualization
  • At least 2 years of experience in database design and data modeling
  • At least 2 years of experience in IT project management
  • At least 2 years of experience in cloud-based infrastructure
  • At least 1 year of experience with enterprise architecture standards, processes, and frameworks (e.g., TOGAF, DoDAF)


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  

  • Hands on experience leading large-scale global data warehousing and analytics projects.
  • Demonstrated industry leadership in the fields of database, data warehousing or data sciences.
  • Track record of implementing AWS services in a variety of distributed computing, enterprise environments.
  • Deep understanding of database and analytical technologies in the industry including MPP databases, noSQL storage, Data Warehouse design, BI reporting and Dashboard development.



  • Establish effective collaboration and interactions with diverse levels of staff
  • Shows an eagerness to learn new systems and explore evolving paradigms (i.e. graph databases)


Working Conditions:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc. Extensive online usage. This is largely a sedentary role.
