Job Description

An entry level full-time Software Engineer is needed to support the Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies Group (GIMMS) to develop applications and web user interfaces for the Biosurveillance Ecosystem (BSVE) resident in a Cloud environment. The GIMMS group focuses on development and analysis of a variety of Earth science satellite data and develops software applications for climate and environmental monitoring, agriculture, ecological-climate based modeling of vector-borne and food borne disease transmission and dynamics projects through the GESTAR-USRA program at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.  The overall task will be to develop software for disease risk mapping currently deployed on Amazon web services.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Update various datasets within the application (satellite and other ancillary data) and running analytics to produce risk maps of the occurrence of disease outbreaks on an on-going basis; improving and upgrading the application as required.
  • Work closely with two research scientists throughout the process.
  • Assist in the continued development of global agricultural monitoring App.
  • Understand user requirements.
  • Combine programming languages with databases and APIs to create dynamic, informative, and user-friendly applications.
  • Provide project updates in functional and technical document format.
  • Understand existing code and offer ways to further optimize it.
  • Monitor and write code to meet the needs and upgrades of current project performance.
  • Understand libraries and incorporate them in code appropriately.
  • Code and deploy applications in a Cross-Platform, Cross-Browser Environment.
  • Research and recommend software.
  • Effectively communicate about projects details and issues to multidisciplinary audience, including the programming languages utilized, the problem solved, the skills learned, and the contribution made.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:


BSc or MSc in Computer Science (with related fields, e.g. Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, Environmental Sciences)



  • 0 – 2 years’ experience in Computer Science.
  • Understanding of mapping software and satellite data sets will be a plus.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  

  • Proficient in HTML5, JAVASCRIPT, CSS3, and JQUERY, C/C++
  • Knowledge and experience with Leaflet, OpenLayers, and GDAL
  • Experience with standard formats such as GeoJSON, JSON, KML, and Mbtiles/Protobuf
  • Familiar with Ajax, Bootstrap, Angular, Linux, and Github
  • Knowledgeable of Web Application Development Frameworks and LAMP
  • Understanding of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP)
  • Provide updates, troubleshoot, and perform unit testing of current website(s)
  • Proficient in POSTGRESQL (or alike database) and usage of web APIs
  • Familiar in using Python/R in writing scripts to optimize data collection and analytics

Working Conditions:

Work will be performed in an office or computer lab environment.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; talk or hear.  Keyboarding for large time spans each day may be a significant part of this position.
