Job Description

Our NAMS mission is to perform strategic multi-disciplinary research and development that supports NASA’s long-term mission requirements across aeronautics, space and earth sciences, and advanced information technologies.

The Team Manager role will provide oversight of an aeronautics research or engineering team helping develop the next-generation air transportation system for both conventional aircraft and unmanned aircraft systems through development and integration of advanced autonomy and software systems.  Our team works closely with the FAA and aviation industry to enable development and testing of future capabilities.

Teams support the Airspace Technology Demonstrations (ATD-2 and ATD-3) (“Integrated Arrival/ Departure/ Surface (IADS) Metroplex Traffic Management”, Dynamic Routing around Weather projects) and SMART-NAS project, among others.

The team provides software development for prototype and fielded versions and future enhancements of aeronautics software systems. The teams are developing and fielding technology for the integration of human in the loop and fast time simulation capabilities already existing in NASA and the FAA. The teams work closely with NASA personnel and support a broader team of FAA and Airline participants.

Position Summary:

The Team Manager will direct and support USRA’s tasks associated with the aeronautics and aerospace systems and be responsible for providing supervision and management for a team of professionals. This role will apply significant knowledge of industry trends and developments to improve service, review work of the team, and recognize system deficiencies and implement effective solutions.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for support in the planning, development, and performance of NAMS Task Orders associated with aeronautics and aerospace systems.
  • Coordinate with the scientific and technical staff and various affiliated working group leads to ensure the research tasks are identified and on track and make adequate progress to ensure the milestones defined are achievable within constraints of the available project resources.
  • Provide technical support and oversight of research projects and software development to create and maintain a vibrant research environment.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other research groups and researchers to foster communication and interdisciplinary linkages.
  • Provide vision and leadership to broaden the applicability of techniques to other collaborations. Lead investigations, ensuring the highest quality in both research execution and output.
  • Represent Aeronautics and Aerospace Systems in meetings and conferences in matters related to accomplishments of research objectives.

Staff management:

  • Complete all administrative tasks in a timely manner: timecards, leave requests, EA/ER approvals, etc.
  • Participate in appropriate management and project/program meetings
  • Support recruiting and hiring diverse staff who add value and achieve organization goals
  • Lead / manage staff to set and achieve department objectives
  • Communicate pertinent information to staff in a timely manner to ensure staff have a clear understanding of organizational goals and desired results through regular meetings and email
  • Create a work environment that encourages creative thinking, collaboration, maintains program focus, and produces results
  • Provide an inclusive workplace that fosters the development of others to their full potential
  • Facilitate collaboration, cooperation, teamwork and support constructive resolution of conflict
  • Direct, monitor and evaluate the work of employees, providing performance feedback and development opportunities and intervening to correct performance problems.

Required Qualifications:

Education:  

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. in Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Physics

Experience:  

  • Minimum of eight (8) years leadership experience in aerospace systems.
  • Experience in managing, developing, and planning research for performance-based task orders  at a NASA research center or equivalent environment including leading and motivating a team of professional scientists and technical staff.
  • Ability to maintain good morale and productivity. Knowledge of team dynamics.
  • Proven ability to think strategically and creatively, to anticipate trends, and to translate thinking into cogent plans for a large and complex research group.
  • Strong leadership skills for a technical enterprise including organizational, problem solving, negotiation, decision making, research and analysis, and interpersonal and motivational skills.
  • Advanced analytical skills in the areas of resource management, technical leadership, interpretation of scientific results, careful reading of legal policies and procedures, and preparation and management of budgets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to work collaboratively and effectively with the customer and team members.

Working Conditions:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc. This is largely a sedentary role.
