Job Description

The Universities Space Research Association (USRA) has a mission to advance space-related sciences and exploration through innovative research, technology, and education programs that involve universities, governments, and the private sector for the benefit of humanity.  As part of this mission, we conduct research on Nanoelectronics & Devices, with the goal to use emerging nanomaterials and nanoscale processes to make devices smaller, cheaper and low power consuming compared to the current state-of-the-art. The research encompasses growth and characterization of nanomaterials, modeling and design of devices, and fabrication and testing of the devices.


Position Summary:

The Visiting Scientist will conduct research and development on a Nanoelectronics & Devices project in support of a task sponsored by the NASA Center for Nanotechnology at NASA’s Ames Research Center.  Activities within the task that may be supported include research and development of paper-based biosensors and support for a flight experiment using high-altitude balloons.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work under the direction of a technical task lead to attain goals of research project
  • Design and develop paper-based biosensors
  • Support device physics modeling and characterization
  • Co-author scientific papers
  • Present research at relevant conferences and academic institutions


Sensor Data Streaming, Storage & Analytics:

  • Prototype build multiple sensor array read-out board and data logging software development.
  • Sensor prototype board design
  • Radiation sensitive material survey and recommendation, synthesis such material in ink form
  • Test report of the prototype sensor on various environmental condition

Additional Responsibilities

  • Other job related duties as assigned


Required Qualifications



  • Doctoral Degree in Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Electrical Engineering or a related field.



  • Experience with biosensors, nanoscale energy generation and storage devices, and/or printable electronics is highly preferred.
  • Semiconductor wafer process experience, layout and mask fabrication, silicon/SiC wafer processing, device simulation, device physics/modeling/characterization
  • Flexible printed electronics experience, direct writing and other 3D printing, ink-jet printing, chemical synthesis for printing, assembly and integration approached for multifunctional electronics, silicon-nanotechnology hybrid device
  • Drive software and hardware combined prototype development and lead the effort on the next generation of sensor system. OrCAD and PCB design and layout. Hand-on experience developing embedded IoT system. Experience designing with FPGA test board.
  • Develop neuromorphic computing algorithm and system architecture. Design and perform machine learning hardware prototyping and simulation.

  • Ability to prepare scientific publications as co-author with other scientists.

    • Obtain pre-approval for travel and meet other requirements in compliance with travel procedures applicable to your assigned projects
    • Complete timesheets daily, in compliance with USRA requirements
    • Complete all trainings as scheduled


Working Conditions:

Work will be performed in a lab environment.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; talk or hear.  The employee may need to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
